In May 2016 mini golf arrived at Boscombe Pier, Dorset, but with a fishy twist. The pier which originally opened in 1889 is described as “”Well worth a visit” , “simple but brilliant” and “A beautiful place to be” on Tripadvisor.

Boscombe pier is only 20 minutes from where we live, but it isn’t somewhere we visit very often. I think Boscombe seafront can often be overlooked, by both locals and holiday makers favouring the flashing lights of Bournemouth. But Boscombe beach is a really lovely award winning beach, having won awards for water quality and sustainability.

With my eldest Rudy being in Reception at Primary school, school holidays are still new to us. So on Friday 13th April, the fishy twist 18 hole course is where we headed!

the prom fish crazy golf  Boscombe Pier boasts the first eco-friendly mini golf on a British Pier with a unique design specially manufactured in Germany. The balls you play with are called ECOBIOBALL. They are ecological and biodegradable golf balls that contain fish food in their core. When the player gets to the last hole – the ball drops into the sea and releases fish food.

The 18 holes varied in difficulty, some were too difficult for my boys (aged 3 and 5), and some even too difficult for my Mother In Law and me (although I did score a hole in one though on the 8th hole!)  All the holes were aptly named ‘Surf Swell’ or ‘The Prom’ and each colourful, appealing and well designed. I was impressed with their condition given they’ve been on the pier for two years.

My boys did start to lose interest towards the end, especially Felix who is 3. I think 18 holes are too many for little ones, I would recommend by-passing some holes if you were with under 5’s. But for an older family, I could imagine it being brilliant fun, with a bit of friendly family rivalry on a warm sunny day.

So the fish of Boscombe shoreline were only fed 3 times by us that day. And Felix decided he was taking his ball home; refusing to let it out of his sight for the rest of the day.

The next day I managed to persuade him to let me put it in a bowl of cold water so we could see what it does when it normally settles on the seabed.

edible fish food golf ballWithin an hour you could see the outer white layer slowly dissolving. After 24 hours the water had become very cloudy and the golf ball noticeably smaller and softer. 12 hours later, so 36 hours after entering the water the outer layer broke away completely revealing the fish food ball inside. The fish food ball was roughly the same size as a 50 pence and incredibly hard. It looks like it would make a welcome food source for a hungry Dorset fish.

Therefore, I can confirm the golf balls are indeed golf balls that feed the fish! Such a brilliant and novel idea that makes Boscombe Pier stand out. And it has an old fashioned charm about it. No flashing lights or over the top gimmicks. I’m looking forward to returning and maybe scoring more than one hole in one next next.

This post is in no way sponsored by Boscombe Pier, I paid for our game myself. These views are my own.
